Giving new life to some old, interesting, rare or special Hofners makes for a great retirement hobby  ......... but it is just a hobby so some of these lovely old guitars may take me a year or more to finish!

  Currently in my Workshop:

  #005  Hofner Committee Thin.

The fingerboard has been restored, frets have been dressed and polished and I have re-engraved the MoP position markers.

Some early prep has been done on restoring the original finish on the body and neck, both of which need rather a lot of work, but I want to keep it original.

I am now hunting for some of the missing hardware to complete the re-build.

    #057  Hofner 190 Bass.

It looks worse in real life than in the pics but it has amazing tone.   I am looking for a Bass that can sound like a full size Double Bass ..... something jazzy!   This one is halfway there already and definitely worth a full restoration.   The pickups may be the secret.   They are Schaller single coils like the Melody Maker pickups Gibson used on the EB 300 and 400.   The positioning of the pickups also helps -  one at the neck,  one in the middle position.

      #058  The Electric Jazz Café.

You can see  The Jazz Café as I first made it if you look at #003 in the Collection,  an acoustic archtop just as Hofner might have made it in the 50's.

Recently I bought it back from its second owner who had added a pickup very badly.    I am in the process of converting it properly to the way I would have done it!!!!!

    #070  457 E2 Special.

A very interesting "special" 457 which I unearthed just outside Bubenreuth.   Almost certainly unique and in its original 80's cellulose, in "Cinnamon", a colour that Hofner have only recently introduced.    One of those early experiments with a new colour perhaps!

I believe I can restore the original finish but everything else will need a lot of work.

    #082  AZ Special.

Some gentle cosmetic work is required here.     A previous owner had drilled 8 holes in the top to fit a surface mounted piezzo!   Argghhh!!

In addition,  the headstock has a few weather checking lines which would have been acceptable but, unfortunately,  some dampness has got in and created a "cloudy" effect.     I have seen this before on 80's guitars finished in polyester.   I shall need to strip it completely and re-finish the headstock.    With such an ornate headstock,  it needs to look good.
