The Savoy slots
in just beneath the Manhattan in Guild's range of archtops
and from its inception in 1953 has been the simplest and
cheapest guitar in the jazz range.
I have fallen for
Guild's archtops over the years and fancied trying the basic
model. My friend Mitch Seidman had
one and he really rated it for its tone.
Mine was the single
pickup version preferred by jazz players and was one of the
first made after Fender transferred Guild's operations to
Corona in California. It is a very well
made guitar and plays well with a great tone, however,
Fender's handling of the Guild range was unsuccessful and,
as a result, all archtop production ceased in just a few of
years.
A tragedy! |
